Now in its fifth year, the Renaissance Ball (a fundraiser to benefit Scripps Clinic and Scripps Green Hospital) is becoming a valuable tradition in La Jolla. This year’s Renaissance Ball took its fragrant theme from the lush gardens of Tivoli. The black-tie gala transformed the grand ballroom of the Hyatt Regency in La Jolla to another time and place, with artfully arranged flora and fauna, fountains, and stunning scenes of the Italian Renaissance.
Funds from the recent affair were earmarked for a private waiting room in the newly-designed Breast Care Center at Scripps for the project.
Burl H. Mackenzie chaired the honorary committee and was also this year’s honoree. Sima and Dr. Parvis Foroozan served on the honorary committee, and Sima worked on the event committee as well. Also among the La Jolla honorary committee members were Lois Roon, Erna and Andrew Viterbi and Audrey Geisel. Karen Gabsch (daughter of the honoree) chaired the successful event, with Nan Pratt as her sponsorship chair.
As Gabsch explained to the sold-out crowd, she chose the Tivoli theme because her mother said it was the most beautiful place she had ever seen - and Mackenzie was almost speechless when she stepped up to the mike to thank everyone for the memorable evening. The festive event included a cocktail reception, dinner, and entertainment - and the lively band kept the party swinging well into the night.
The large local guest list also included Alex Butterfield, Dr. Mitchell and Debbie Friedlaender, Dirk and Joan Metzker, Eunice and Dr. Jerry Williams, Gloria Penner and Bill Snyder, Eli and Diana Lombrozo, Dr. Robert and Julia Sarnoff, Dr. Ruth Grobstein, David and Patsy Marino, Dr. Gaston and Connie Molina, Charles and Viviana Polinsky and Virginia Monday.
