The annual Community Holocaust Commemoration, which has been ongoing for more than three decades, took place on Sunday, May 4, in the David & Dorothea Garfield Theater of the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in La Jolla. This important commemoration is the collaboration between the Jewish Community Relations Council of the United Jewish Federation of San Diego County, the New Life Club, the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center Jacobs Family Campus, the Agency for Jewish Education, Jewish Family Service and the San Diego Rabbinical Association.
In this, the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel, “HaBricha - The Long Road to Israel” was the theme of the commemoration. The program featured speakers along with a short video presentation featuring stories of Holocaust survivors and the experiences they endured en route to Israel.
It also included a military color guard reminiscent of concentration camp liberation, and a candle lighting and memorial prayer service led by local rabbis and cantors. This year there was also a separate program for teens studying for their Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. This program included an opportunity for the students to have conversations with a Holocaust survivor as well as other teens who have visited Poland and Israel.
