In response to the recent shooting at Emmanuel AME Church in South Carolina, Pastor Churck Norris of Prince Chapel by the Sea African Methodist Episcopal Church in La Jolla, will hold a prayer vigil 6-7 p.m. tonight, Friday, June 19. He released the following e-mail to the community and media sharing his plans:
“By now, I know you’ve heard the horrific news concerning Emmanuel AME Church in South Carolina. Unfortunately, acts of violence against places of worship are far too familiar in our society. Whether it’s an attack on a sikh temple in Wisconsin, mosque in Phoenix, anti-abortionist church shooting in Kansas, defacing synagogues in San Francisco, burning Black churches in the South — and now the shooting of persons in prayer — we must remain steadfast in our faith that God is with us!
Now is not the time to lock our doors. Instead, now is the time to “open the doors of the church!”
There has been a great outpouring of love from many in the La Jolla Community, who have vocalized their outrage to such injustice. As a result, I feel the Holy Spirit telling me to hold a “Prayer Vigil.” As a result, I would like for those who can, to join me this evening 6-7 p.m. Friday, June 19, in our sanctuary for a time of prayer and solidarity.” Pastor Chuck Norris
