President Barack Obama will return to San Diego next month to attend a college basketball game aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson on Veterans Day, the organizers announced Thursday.

The first Quicken Loans Carrier Classic, scheduled for Nov. 11, will pit the University of North Carolina against Michigan State University.

A makeshift basketball court and grandstands for about 7,000 fans will be constructed on the flight deck, and if it rains, the game will be played on the hangar deck.

“We’re honored that President Obama plans to attend,” said Rear Adm. Dennis Moynihan. The ship is a representative of more than 100 Navy ships that are deployed right now. We see this as a celebration of service for all veterans, and we also see this as a great opportunity to showcase what our Navy does on a daily basis.”

The Carl Vinson is the ship from which the body of Osama bin Laden was dumped into the Arabian Sea after he was killed in Pakistan last May.

Most of the tickets will go to active duty military members and their families. There will be no public ticket sales.
