Power black-outs remain in La Jolla

All but 1,400 of the more than 10,000 San Diego Gas & Electric customers that were without power Friday morning due to storm-related outages had their power restored by noon, according to utility officials.

The nine remaining blacked-out areas included neighborhoods in and around Clairemont, Escondido, Harmony Grove, La Jolla, Oceanside, Otay Mesa, Pala and Spring Valley.

More than 100,000 SDG&E customers have lost electrical service at various times since the winter storms began four days ago.

Some schools were forced to close Thursday due to power outages, including Loma Portal Elementary in San Diego and Grossmont High in La Mesa. Classes resumed at both campuses Friday.

Schools in Julian and the Mountain Empire School District canceled their classes Friday, but those decisions were based on treacherous driving conditions on winding, snow- and ice-covered rural roads and passes rather than problems with electrical service, officials said.
