Pop Warner honors Mendoza

La Jolla Pop Warner player Austin Mendoza recently learned that he was named an All-American Scholar by the Pop Warner Association. He is the first La Jolla Torrey to be named to the honors program.

The winners are named after a process that begins at the local level. Youngsters are nominated and then put up against other players in Pop Warner’s eight national regions. To qualify students must have a top grade point average. In the end, 35 football players and 25 cheer team members in each grade are named to the First Team, honored at an awards banquet and are eligible for scholarships. This year’s event will be held May 29 in Philadelphia.

Austin is a 13-year-old 8th grader who also just competed in the California State Geography Bee held in Sacramento. He was among the top 100 out of 100,000 in the state.
