Police respond to Shores incident

A near altercation over a stolen cell phone led to police being called and the arrest of a juvenile in La Jolla Shores Sunday evening.

“No one was hurt -– there was a confrontation due to a stolen cell phone reported to lifeguards,” said Lt. Andy Lerum, lifeguard spokesman. “Lifeguards summoned police because there were a lot of individuals who appeared to be part of a gang. Police were able to get there in time to defuse the situation.”

A resident who was walking along the beach told the Light she counted about 40 uniformed police officers, some with dogs, and that neighbors said there had been a fight.

San Diego Police Department Spokeswoman Monica Munoz said the incident occurred at 5:15 p.m. on June 7 and involved a group of Asian males in their 20s. “They didn’t recover the phone,” she said. “One person was detained, a juvenile.”
