A 15-year-old girl was shot to death early Friday while “hanging out” with her boyfriend, her female cousin, and another young male in Clairemont Mesa’s Lindbergh Park, police said.

Officers were called to investigate the shooting in the 4100 block of Ashford Street at about 1:20 a.m., said San Diego police homicide Lt. Kevin Rooney.

Joanna Vargas, a junior at Madison High School, was struck by a single gunshot that came from an unknown direction, Rooney said, adding that she died at the scene.

At the time, Vargas, her boyfriend and the other young couple were “just hanging out” in the park, which was near the girl’s home, according to Rooney.

No one else was injured.

Rooney said the survivors saw a white SUV parked on adjacent Ashford Street at the time of the shooting. The driver left the area at normal speed and turned on Balboa Avenue.
