Police identify man who drowned when boat flipped
Authorities released the name Tuesday of a man who drowned after the boat he was in with more than a dozen other illegal immigrants foundered in the ocean off Torrey Pines State Beach.
Jose Manuel Ortiz, 34, was pronounced dead at UCSD Thornton Hospital about 5:30 a.m. Saturday, roughly an hour after the small fishing craft he and his companions had used to sneak into U.S. waters capsized, according to Customs and Border Protection officials and the county Medical Examiner’s Office.
About 100 law enforcement officers from various agencies responded to the emergency, pulling several people from the water and providing emergency medical assistance on the beach to Ortiz and another migrant.
A total of six people were taken to hospitals. One was admitted in critical condition.
