Physician, author and patient advocate is Revelle Forum guest

Physician, author and Atlantic Monthly correspondent Abraham Verghese will visit UCSD to discuss his acclaimed novel, “Cutting for Stone,” and to share insights on both the process of writing and the humanistic practice of medicine.

As a guest of the Revelle Forum Speakers Series, Verghese will take the stage at 7 p.m. March 23 in the auditorium of The Neurosciences Institute, 10640 John Jay Hopkins Drive, La Jolla.

Parking is free.

Lauded as one of the best novels of 2009, Verghese’s first work of fiction (he also penned the bestselling nonfiction books “My Own Country” and “The Tennis Partner”), “Cutting for Stone’ is a sweeping story of love, betrayal, political upheaval, and medicine; a saga of twin brothers torn apart by revolution in Africa, who find personal connection and spiritual redemption through their shared passion for the work of healing others.

Verghese is a physician and Professor of the Theory and Practice of Medicine at Stanford University and Senior Associate Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine. He is a world-renowned advocate for the humanistic practice of medicine. Born of Indian parents who were teachers in Ethiopia, he grew up near Addis Ababa and began his medical training there.
