Penner named Journalist of the Year

La Jolla resident Gloria Penner was named Journalist of the Year at the 2011 the Society of Professional Journalists San Diego Area Journalism Contest awards ceremony.

The longtime KPBS broadcaster was honored for her career achievements, consistent adherence to the high standards of journalism, service to the journalism profession and advancement of First Amendment rights.

KPBS was also honored for excellence in journalism at the 2011 Society of Professional Journalists’ San Diego Chapter awards banquet on July 8, 2011. KPBS received 26 awards, including 14 first place awards, Journalist of the Year, the Sol Price Prize and the Diversity Prize.

Ana Tintocalis was awarded the Sol Price Prize for her work that meets ethical standards, as well as shows sensitivity, in KPBS’ “San Diego Gang Stories.” She also won the Diversity Prize for “A Rise in Zapotec-Speaking People in the Golden State.”
