Overturned gravel truck causing I-5 disruption
The California Highway Patrol reports that a three-axle dump truck carrying gravel overturned this morning about 9:12 a.m. spreading debris across the I-5 freeway blocking most of its southbound lanes.
“The location was southbound I-5 just south of Highway 52,” said CHP officer Ray Scheidnes. “One of the units on the scene said the amount of gravel spilled is about two inches deep and 75 yards across all four lanes.”
Scheidnes said southbound traffic is managing to get through on the far right lane, but added traffic flow is extremely slow and that the area has been designated a “long-term closure.” He added people coming out of North County heading south toward San Diego are being encouraged to use southbound I-805 avoiding southbound I-5.
“It’s going to take awhile,” said Scheidnes about reopening the main portion of the I-5 freeway impacted by the spill. “It’s not just the gravel. The truck itself that overturned has to be righted and removed.”
