Sharon Ross, executive director of Donate Life San Diego will speak about organ donation at a free, public forum 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 22 in the Fellowship Hall at the La Jolla United Methodist Church, 6063 La Jolla Blvd. Donate Life (the new national name) is also known locally as Lifesharing and was founded in 1984 as a division of UCSD Medical Center. It is one of 58 regional non-profits dedicated to the life-saving and life-enhancing benefits of organ and tissue donation.
The timing of this session is particularly appropriate, as April is National Donate Month. Ross will speak of the need for organ and tissue donation in the area. More than 2,200 people are on waiting lists. Ninety of “our neighbors” (as Ross calls them) died last year waiting for organs. She calls donors and recipients, heroes and miracles, heroes for giving life to others and miracles by getting a second chance. Many of her volunteers are there because someone said “yes” to donation.
Ross will bring a transplant recipient along for questions and answers.
