Orange County freeway work could slow San Diego travelers

San Diegans planning to drive north through Orange County may want to give a wide berth to the Santa Ana (5) Freeway at late-night hours, as some major freeway shutdowns are pending next week.

The 5 freeway will be closed north of Anaheim overnights starting

Sunday, for six nights, near the Los Angeles-Orange county line.

Lane closures will begin at 10 p.m. each night with the freeway fully

closing by 11:30 p.m. It will begin re-opening at 4 a.m. every morning, but some lanes will stay closed until 5 a.m.

The closures will remain in effect through Friday night and Saturday

morning.

Motorists are recommended to skirt the closure zone by taking the San

Gabriel (605) and Riverside (91) freeways, which form a triangle with the closed section of Interstate 5. The San Diego (405) Freeway through western Orange County is also a good detour, Caltrans officials said.

The construction is part of the Santa Ana (5) Freeway Gateway project,

which is widening the freeway between the 91 Freeway and the Los Angeles County line. Work on the project began in 2006 and is scheduled to conclude this fall.
