On a high note!

The San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory’s Spring Musicale, a private concert for its Angels’ Angels benefactors, was held March 14 at the Rancho Santa Fe home of artist Sunna Bohlen. The afternoon featured cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and lively performances by four accomplished musicians in the program.

Corrie Bunnell opened the concert with Bartholdy’s Violin Concerto in E Minor, Movement 1, accompanied by Bryan Verhoye. Next, Dominique Kim performed Mozart’s Concerto for Flute in G Major, Movement 1, accompanied by her sister, Valerie Kim. The girls then switched places for Valerie’s performance of Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major, Movement 1, accompanied by Dominique. Jay Shim closed the concert with Bassi’s Fantasie du Concerto from “Rigoletto,” accompanied by Verhoye.

Event co-chairs Anni Lipper and June Shillman said three such concerts are presented annually for Angels’ Angels members whose ranks include benefactors who donate $350 for a single membership or $600 for a dual, to support the young musicians.

The San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory is the sixth-oldest youth orchestra in the country. The 64-year-old program, for ages 7-25, trains hundreds of students annually in partnership with the San Diego Park and Recreation Department funded in part by the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture.

“We take students at every level,” Youth Symphony President Dalouge Smith said. “They find their niche and from there go as far musically as they strive to achieve. We hope they all continue to have a lifelong relationship with music as a way to relate to their communities.”
