No sightings of a baby sperm whale found beached at Torrey Pines on Sunday night were reported Wednesday as of early afternoon, according to SeaWorld San Diego.

The whale was returned to the water by a team of about 20 people gathered by SeaWorld, but was seen swimming nearby later on Monday.

Sperm whales generally stay in waters off northern California, Oregon and Washington and rarely come close to shore. The sightings off San Diego are usually of gray whales.

SeaWorld staffers were hoping the whale beached Sunday night has reunited with its mother.
