Museum admission free to military
By City News ServiceMore than 600 museums nationwide will be free for active-duty military and their families from Memorial Day to Labor Day in connection with the “Blue Star Museums” program announced Monday in Balboa Park by officials from the National Endowment for the Arts.
“America’s museums are proud to join the rest of the country in thanking our military personnel and their families for their service and sacrifice,” said Rocco Landesman, chairman of the NEA. “I cannot imagine a better way to do that than welcoming them in to explore and enjoy the extraordinary cultural heritage our museums present.”
Landesman was joined by San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, Navy Rear Adm. Garry Bonelli and area arts officials at the San Diego Museum of Art to announce the “Blue Star Museums” program.
Among the 14 museums in San Diego County taking part in the program are the Japanese Friendship Garden, Mingei International Museum, Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego Hall of Champions in Balboa Park, the California Surf Museum in Oceanside and Lux Art Institute in Encinitas.
