Muirlands Middle School and La Jolla High School will celebrate the completion of a newly renovated athletic field on Saturday at noon at the Muirlands Field.

The new complex includes a synthetic turf field, a new running surface, and a fitness unit. The celebration will take place prior to the 17th annual La Jolla High School Alumni baseball game.

The project took over three years and cost over $1.3 million dollars to complete, and was funded by individual and family donations, businesses, and matching funds from the San Diego Unified School District. The district funding came in the form of a state facilities fund earmarked for high school athletic fields and matched the first $500,000 that was raised by the community.

Howard Frank, chair of the Turf It committee noted that more than “1,100 students participating in daily physical education classes will enjoy the safest state of the art facility anywhere within the San Diego Unified School District.”

The field will continue to be the home of the La Jolla High School baseball team and will be used by the high school field hockey, soccer, and lacrosse teams as well as club teams from Muirlands.
