MTS urges Chargers fans to take buses, trolleys

Fans attending Sunday’s sold-out San Diego Chargers-New York Jets playoff game at Qualcomm Stadium were encouraged Tuesday to travel early and use public transportation to avoid parking and traffic hassles.

“We are encouraging everyone to travel early to the Chargers’ playoff game,” said Wayne Terry, chief operating officer of the Metropolitan Transit System Rail.

“This game is sold out and there will be no no-shows,” he said. “The stadium will be packed.’”

“Plan to travel early, buy your Day Pass or round-trip ticket for the trolley before the game, or go to one of the five locations around the county to take the Chargers Express Bus service right to the stadium,” Terry said.

MTS will offer additional bus and trolley service to Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday to meet the increased demand.

There will be enhanced service Sunday on the trolley’s Green Line from Old Town to Qualcomm Stadium and from the 70th Street Trolley Station to the stadium, starting at 9:45 a.m., according to MTS.

Special $5 commemorative day passes will be available at the Chargers Team Store at Qualcomm Stadium and at the MTS Transit Store downtown for travel Sunday to the stadium.

“Chargers Express” buses will be operating from five locations around San Diego County, with a $10 round-trip fare, according to MTS. Boarding starts two hours before kickoff, with the final bus leaving 45 minutes before the game. Post-game buses depart Qualcomm Stadium 20 minutes after the final whistle.

The “Chargers Express’” buses will depart from Park-and-Ride locations at:

— Kearny Mesa Traffic Court, Complex Street at Clairemont Mesa Boulevard;

— Governor Drive and Interstate 805;

— Spring Street Trolley Station, state Route 94 and Spring Street;

— Mira Mesa, Interstate 15 and Mira Mesa Boulevard; and

— Chula Vista High School, K Street Parking Lot, 820 Fourth Ave.
