MTS launches Compass Card system

Reloadable plastic cards now available for public transit

Ticket vending machines at all 53 San Diego Trolley stations are now equipped to sell and reload new credit card-like monthly transit passes, the Metropolitan Transit System announced Wednesday.

The so-called Compass Cards are plastic, reusable, reloadable monthly transit passes that riders touch against an electronic reader when boarding buses, trolleys and trains.

Compass Cards are now also available at 20 Vons grocery stores, five check cashing locations, at MTS’ downtown transit center and at various markets around San Diego County.

“Public transportation is essential to many people in our region and providing more outlets for pass sales will be a major convenience for our customers,” said Tony Young, a San Diego City Councilman, who also sits on the MTS board.
