Mixed results for La Jolla soccer teams
The boys’ soccer team from The Bishop’s School remained unbeaten this season with a pair of nonleague wins last week.
The Knights topped Kearney, 2-1, on Jan. 6. They followed that up with a 2-0 victory over the Army-Navy Academy of Carlsbad on Jan. 8. Stefano Vidali scored a goal and added an assist, and Kyle Jester scored once in the victory over Army-Navy. Justin Peabody made five saves in goal for Bishop’s.
La Jolla Country Day played to a 1-1 draw with Grossmont on Jan. 6, scoring in the second half against the Division II powerhouse. Ryan French’s fifth goal of the season came in the final minute of regulation on a cross from Alistair Dobke. Danny Rogers, Philip Poyhonen and Rodrigo Cuenca all played solid defense, Torreys coach Jerry Fleischhacker said.
The Torreys fell to Santana, 2-1, on Jan. 8. French scored the team’s lone goal on a through ball from Hunter Khalegi.
La Jolla High School fell to Eastlake, 2-1, on Jan. 5. The Vikings lost their Jan. 8 game against Carlsbad, 3-0.
Girls’ soccer
La Jolla rolled to a 6-2 victory over Canyon Crest Academy on Jan. 5. The Vikings secured their second straight win. Brianna Chapman scored two goals, while Ellen Latta, Amanda Beary, Karly Zlatic and Itzel Caro each added one.Country Day fell, 2-1, to Clairemont on Jan. 7, dropping to 3-2-1 this season. The Torreys fell behind by two goals early and didn’t score until Ana Cruz converted a penalty kick chance in the second half.
Bishop’s rolled to a 3-0 victory over Poway on Jan. 7. Devan Osegueda recorded the shutout in goal for the Knights, who improved to 10-2-1 this season.
Boys’ basketball
La Jolla fell to Lincoln, 67-46, on Jan. 5, despite getting 15 points from Taylor Davis and 12 from Jack Latta.The Vikings bounced back with a 53-47 victory over Scripps Ranch on Jan. 8. Ryan Mills led the way with 20 points.
La Jolla won again on Jan. 9, beating Preuss, 57-29. Nick Sebald had 12 points, and Latta added 11.
Country Day rolled to a 63-42 victory over San Dieguito Academy on Jan. 8, behind a 24-point effort from Ryan Watt. Frankie Bamford scored 13 points, and Alex Perez added 10.
The Torreys fell the next night, 59-56, to Serra, as their record this season dropped to 9-4.
Bishop’s won its only game last week, beating Bonita Vista, 88-53, on Jan. 8. Maliik Love led the way with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Dominique Love had 15 and 12 respectively. Stephen Kaiser scored 24 points for the Knights.
Girls’ basketball
La Jolla secured a 51-42 victory over Lincoln on Jan. 5, but then dropped a 46-22 decision to Scripps Ranch on Jan. 8. Taylor Templeton scored eight points in the defeat.Country Day secured an easy 91-16 victory over San Dieguito Academy on Jan. 8, thanks in large part to a suffocating defense that registered 25 steals. Ariana Elegado, Teesha Solomon and Kaylah Miller each scored 16 points for the Torreys, while Maya Hood and Kelsey Plum each added 14 in the lopsided victory.
Bishop’s continued its hot start with a 75-47 triumph over Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas on Jan. 9. The Knights improved to 15-2 this season.
