Some sort of military explosive was found by a hiker near Highway 52 north of the Mission Trails Regional Park on Saturday, a San Diego police officer said.

The find was reported just before 9 a.m. on federal land just north of Highway 52, northeast of Tierrasanta, Officer Brad Ruff said.

The hiker used GPS coordinates to direct authorities to the ordnance, Ruff said.

Explosives experts at MCAS Miramar were called out to the scene, but a base spokesman didn’t have any further information.

The area had been used for live artillery practice, and for pilots to drop dud bombs, during World War II.
