Met Life settles in insurance case

MetLife Inc. agreed to pay $13.5 million to the federal government for paying a San Diego insurance brokerage to get the business of the firm’s largest clients.

The insurance giant made improper payments to the local firm between 1999 and 2005, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Diego. The office did not identify the firm.

According to the settlement agreement, the firm dealt with large companies, helping them find insurance companies that could provide life, health and disability benefits for their employees.
