Merriman files counter suit against Tila Tequila

San Diego Charger Shawne Merriman has filed a counter lawsuit against ex-girlfriend and reality show hostess Tila Tequila, accusing her of spreading lies about him in order to ruin his career.

The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court claims “intentional interference with contract and unfair competition as well as trademark infringement” because the defendant used Merriman’s famous “Lights Out” logo on her Web site, according to, which first reported the lawsuit this morning.

The riff between the former couple stems from a domestic disturbance at Merriman’s Poway home in September.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the home Sept. 6. They took Merriman into custody after Nguyen signed a citizen’s arrest warrant accusing him of battery and false imprisonment. He was released a short time later.

District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis later declined to press charges, finding there was “insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that any crime was committed.”

The 6-foot-4, 280-pound Merriman said he was protecting the 4-foot-11, 93-pound woman because she was intoxicated and wanted to drive home. Tequila - whose real last name is Nguyen - denied being drunk.

On the same early morning of the attack, the couple was spotted partying at Stingaree nightclub in downtown San Diego, where Nguyen was photographed giving Merriman a lap dance.

Last month, Nguyen filed a $1.5 million lawsuit against Merriman, claiming assault, battery, false imprisonment and emotional distress.

According to Merriman’s suit, Nguyen posted all sorts of lies on her Web site, including stories that the linebacker “choked and attacked” her, “sleeps with minors and forces them to take drugs,” and that he manufactures drugs in his Poway home.

Merriman also claims in his suit that Nguyen admitted her lying scheme, at one time saying, “yes, that is why I did a `spin’ now ... cuz now everyone is LOVINGGGG me,” according to

Merriman said Nguyen’s accusations thwarted a deal to produce a line of T-shirts for Wal-Mart.

Nguyen starred in two installments of an MTV dating show called “A Shot At Love.” In the show, male and female contestants vied for Nguyen, who is bisexual.
