Members of La Jolla’s Beth El gather for fifth night of Hanukkah

On Dec.5, about 200 people of all ages turned out when La Jolla’s Congregation Beth El hosted “Chagigat Hanukkah.”

Everyone was invited to bring a menorah for the congregational candle-lighting celebrating the 5th day of Hanukkah.

Emily Bartell, program director, carefully selected an assortment of crafts. The children and their parents and grandparents decorated candle boxes, doorknob hangers, and assembled snap-together dreidels.

When they weren’t doing projects the children sat up front and were captivated by a special musical performance by Craig Parks. Spontaneous folk dancing erupted around the social hall when he played the music for the hora, a traditional eastern European dance.
