Medical center honors cancer expert
Barbara Parker, M.D., was chosen by the UCSD Medical Center as the 2009 Physician of the Year.
Parker is the medical director of oncology services at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center. Mike Preziosi, M.D., department of medicine was honored as the 2009 House Officer of the Year.
The Medical Staff Executive Committee, composed of UCSD Medical Center physicians, chose the physicians for their commitment to health care and serving the community.
Parker specializes in breast medical oncology and is known for her compassionate and comprehensive care, for which she was awarded the Leonard Tow Humanism Award. She was named one of San Diego’s top doctors in medical oncology for 2006, 2007 and 2008.
She also promotes health education in the community and speaks at local events like the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Walk.
Preziosi is the chief medical resident and is highly experienced in the diagnosis and management of difficult cases, especially those involving multiple organ systems. He challenged commonly used approaches and tenets in 2008 in a presentation entitled “How to become a better diagnostician.”
He has volunteered his expertise locally as a leader at the Logan Heights Clinic. Globally, he worked in Vinetz Laboratory in Peru and recently led efforts in establishing global medicine as an elective for internal medicine residents training in Mozambique.
