A Pacific Beach man who was awakened in his home Wednesday morning by a masked burglar with a gun fatally knifed the intruder in the chest during an ensuing fight, authorities reported.

San Diego police got a report about the stabbing shortly before 6 a.m., SDPD Sgt. Jorge Leon said.

Officers arrived in the neighborhood to find a mortally wounded 23-year-old man and a friend of his alongside Emerald Street, Capt. Jim Collins told reporters. The stabbing victim died at the scene a short time later.

Following a trail of blood, police determined that the assault had occurred at a nearby home on Bayard Street, according to Collins. Inside the house, officers found a couple in their 20s who described being awoken and confronted by a burglar with his face concealed.

He had a mask on, and he was armed,’' Collins told KGTV.The male (resident) started fighting with the (intruder) who was masked up. During the fight, the person who climbed in (through a window) was stabbed.’'

Inside the residence, officers found live cannabis plants, and the couple told them the intruder had demanded marijuana before the scuffle broke out, the news station reported.

No arrests were immediately reported. The dead man’s name was withheld pending notification of his family.

Detectives were trying to determine whether the stabbing, which occurred

as the suspected burglar was scuffling with the two male occupants of the

apartment, was a case of legally justifiable self-defense, the captain said.

The intruder may have been known to the residents, according to

broadcast news reports.
