Man, woman die in separate incidents off La Jolla

A middle-aged man and a female would-be diver both died Sunday after separate failed rescue efforts off the La Jolla coast, a lifeguard lieutenant said.

The male was found floating in the water shortly after 9 a.m. by a stand-up paddler, and lifeguards brought him to La Jolla Shores, where they performed CPR on him on the beach, Lt. Andy Lerum said.

Paramedics took him to Scripps Memorial Hospital but he did not show any signs of life, Lerum said.

Lifeguards rescued the woman only minutes earlier.

Lerum said they were opening the La Jolla Shores tower when they spotted a pair of divers struggling to reach shore.

It turned out the pair were a husband and wife, and CPR was performed on the wife before she was also sent to Scripps Memorial Hospital, he said.

The couple intended to dive, but hadn’t started when she got into

trouble, according to the lieutenant.

He said the circumstances that led to either incident hadn’t been

determined.
