Macy’s at UTC robbed by two using sledgehammer

By City News Service

Two people used a sledgehammer to break into a jewelry case in a Macy’s store at the University Town Center Westfield mall Sunday and are still on the loose.

The suspects smashed glass cases just before 9:40 a.m. in the Macy’s at 4333 La Jolla Village Dr., ran out of the store and sped off in a 2000 Chevy Malibu driven by a third suspect, said San Diego Police Sgt. Ramona Hastings.

Hastings originally said three occupants of a sedan caught by police were arrested, but later said those suspects were detained and released.

No descriptions of the suspected robbers was immediately available.
