Another year means another birthday for Georgeanna Lipe, who celebrated her 101st birthday last week.

Originally from Nashville, Lipe moved to La Jolla in 1936 when her husband, Dr. JT Lipe, accepted a position as a local physician. The couple moved to La Jolla sight unseen after Dr. Lipe completed his internship and residency in Rochester, N.Y. He practiced general medicine on Prospect Street.

Georgeanna, who graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in medical illustration, opened an art gallery on Girard Avenue, featuring her watercolor paintings.

“She was very successful in selling her artwork,” said her son, Steele Lipe, adding that her paintings became so popular that they can now be found all over the western United States.

Georgeanna and JT Lipe, who passed away in 1993, had three children in La Jolla. Steele, now a resident of northern Virginia, was their first child, born in 1938. The couple then had two daughters, Terry Jordan and Susanna Aalbers, who is now the vice president of the Holiday Bowl football game.

The family lived in several homes in La Jolla, including the one now owned by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Georgeanna Lipe now lives in Carmel Valley.
