Local Toastmasters group celebrates 30 years

Toastmasters of La Jolla is celebrating its 30th anniversary Tuesday, June 3, 2008. All past members and interested persons are welcome to attend our meeting. Refreshments will be provided.

The local club was founded June 1, 1978, by Helen Blanchard. Blanchard is known as the first lady of Toastmasters. She was also the first women president of the local club, then went on to be the first women president for Toastmasters International.

After Blanchard was allowed to join Toastmasters, she opened the gates for women all over the world to join Toastmasters in their communities.

Toastmasters of La Jolla is a member club with Toastmasters International, a worldwide organization with over 10,500 clubs and over 200,000 members, in over 90 countries. Toastmasters began in 1924 with a mission that remains the same today.

Mission Statement:

The mission of this organization is to provide a mutually supportive positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.

Toastmasters of La Jolla’s current board members are Jennifer Farr-Jones, president; Jake Tarbox, vice president of education; C. Lee Sandvick, vice president of membership; Tyler Eppley, vice president of public relations; Ajit Viswanathan, treasurer; Sue MacDonald, secretary.

The club meets from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. every Tuesday at the La Jolla Firehouse YMCA Engine Room on the first floor. Everyone is welcome.
