Local science projects tops

Bishop’s senior Aaron Schild; sophomores Meredith Lehmann, Arjun and Varun Sharma; and eighth-grader Kamran Jamil received awards recently at the 56th Annual Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair at SDSU.

Schild’s project, “Sun in Your Eyes? Electrochromic Sun-Tracking Windshield,” was co-presented with La Jolla High School student Rafael Cosman and was awarded the Senior International ISEF Trip Sweepstakes prize.

Lehmann worked on a project, “Transportation Networks and the Propagation of Novel H1N1 Swine,” that examined the relative importance of air and long-distance auto travel on the spread of an H1N1 swine flulike epidemic in the United States. She was selected to participate in the California State Science Fair, Senior Division category of Medicine.

Varun Sharma, who placed first in his division in biochemistry, presented “Does Mitochondrial DNA Share Same Path As Its Ancestral Bacteria?”

Arjun Sharma focused on the medicine division with the project “Scale-free Properties in Tissue Specific Transcriptional Networks.” His project earned him a divisional first place and an SDSC Computational Science Award.

Middle school student Jamil took first place for his chemistry project “Steel and Acid Rain: Does Acid Make the Steel Rust Faster?”
