BY JOE LaCAVACome join us Thursday night at the 7th Annual Taste of Bird Rock. This year’s theme, “Opportunity through Community,” resonates throughout our neighborhood as well as all of La Jolla.
The Taste has evolved into a multi-faceted event that highlights all that is good about Bird Rock. Foremost, it showcases our restaurants with their assortment of delectable delights. It highlights our nearly 100 shops and services and allows them to give thanks to their loyal customers. It is a chance for friends and neighbors to reflect on the good life in our neighborhood.
Lastly, and perhaps more importantly, it is an opportunity to focus on the various ways that merchants and residents have made a difference in the lives of others. We are grateful that even in these difficult times sponsors have stepped up to support the education of children in our community and in other communities in need.
Raffle and Taste of Bird Rock tickets may still be available, but it will sell out. A friendly reminder: This is a community celebration not a block party, no open containers are allowed on the sidewalk and streets, and San Diego police will be on patrol.
These kinds of events are our way of highlighting and supporting our local merchants. When you think about needed products, dining, and services, we urge you to stay west of the 5. La Jolla is blessed with three great shopping districts: the Village, the Shores and Bird Rock. Vibrant merchant districts make for a better community; through community comes the opportunity to improve the lives of others. Shop locally, it is good for all of us.
In closing. I want to thank La Jollans for supporting our event by allowing us to close La Jolla Boulevard for a few hours; a special thanks to the Bird Rock residents on La Jolla Hermosa and Chelsea who accept the re-routed traffic and buses; and, of course our tireless chairs Felicia, Celia and Pamela and all the volunteers who make this event happen.
Joe LaCava is president of the Bird Rock Community Council.
