LJ Newcomers celebrate anniversary

The La Jolla Newcomers Club celebrated the kickoff of its 10th year at a reception welcoming new President Beth Saks on Sept. 13. More than 100 members gathered at the home of Fred and Vivienne Saleh to sip champagne and taste gourmet appetizers.

“I love this club and what it does for the community,” Saks said.

“My goals are to introduce our members to new experiences and new venues in La Jolla and throughout San Diego.”

Before moving to La Jolla in 2007, Saks founded and was director of a mental health center in New York for some 25 years. Her husband, Norman, is a retired engineer and has recently written a book on the jazz musician Charlie Parker. The Saks also volunteer at the San Diego International Visitors Information Center and are world travelers.

The La Jolla Newcomers Club is a social organization that helps new residents become acquainted with the community through varied interest groups and activities.

Residents who have moved into the 92037 ZIP code within the last three years are eligible to join the club. Applications are available at
