Lightner to talk about Pool plans

First District Councilwoman Sherri Lightner will be talking about proposed plans to manage the seals and people at the Children’s Pool in several meetings over the next few weeks.

She has been working with Council President Ben Hueso to get public comment prior to the council’s consideration of several options. Among them is a plan to seek a Local Coastal Program amendment to close the beach during pupping season from December 15 to May 15.

Options already approved by a four-member council committee include seeking an emergency Coastal Development Permit to keep the rope barrier up year round, seeking private funding to hire a park ranger to patrol the pool and supervise a city-sanctioned volunteer docent program for the Children’s Pool and prohibiting dogs on the beach, 24 hours a day, year-round.

Lightner will be attending the Parks and Beaches Committee meeting at 4 p.m. April 26 at the Rec Center and the La Jolla CPA meeting at 6 p.m. May 6, also at the rec center to discuss the plans and seek the groups’ recommendations.

In addition, there will be a communitywide meeting at 6 p.m. May 17 at Sherwood Auditorium at MCASD-La Jolla, 700 Prospect St.

A news release from Lightner’s office states there will be an opportunity for all interested parties to speak during public comment.
