Athenaeum to hold classes

The Athenaeum Music and Arts Library will encourage students to be adventurous and imaginative during a series of seven art and mixed media classes running June 29 – Aug. 7. MCASD plans lecture

Dr. Hugh M. Davies, director of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, will lecture on contemporary painter Francis Bacon at 7 p.m. July 16 at the museum’s La Jolla location. Davies is an internationally acclaimed expert on the art of Bacon, and has lectured extensively on the subject, most recently at Tate Modern.

He will discuss the interviews he held with Bacon in 1972 and 1973, and the series of paintings known as the “Black Triptychs.” The cost is $5 for nonmembers and free for members. For more information, go to

Reading program set

The La Jolla Library will hold its annual Summer Reading Program now through Aug. 15. The theme is “Be Creative” for children, who will receive a free book and other prizes after reading 10 books. For teens, the theme is “Express Yourself,” and participants will win a free book after 10 hours of reading. The event will also feature music, puppetry, art classes and door prizes.
