Legends brings Dr. Seuss home

By Light Staff

Legends Gallery Fine Art of La Jolla, specializing in the artwork of Dr. Seuss, is opening today.

Other artists exhibited at the new art gallery at 1205 Prospect St. include Mackenzie Thorpe, Nelson De La Nuez, Alexander Calder, Norman Rockwell and Marc Chagall.

“Bringing the artwork of Dr. Seuss back to La Jolla where it all began is a tremendous honor for us,” said Roree Mayhew, gallery director. “Our staff is so knowledgeable about the art of Dr. Seuss. Most of us have handled the work since 1997, when this amazing gift was first shared with the world.”

Mayhew said the gallery also carries sculptures.

“We have a wonderful collection of unorthodox taxidermy sculptures, reproductions of character heads on display that he (Ted Geisel) created in the ‘30s,” said Mayhew. “We have a life-size Green Eggs and Ham bronze sculpture.”

A gala event, “Dr. Seuss: Rare Editions,” will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. May 22. Special guest will be curator Bill Dreyer. Mayhew said Dreyer will share great stories about Dr. Seuss.

“I hear he is even going to sing a song,” he added.

“We’re really excited to be bringing a fun and enjoyable art experience back to La Jolla,” Mayhew said.

Legends will be open seven days a week: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

One of the original Addi chain of galleries, Legends Fine Art Gallery opened in 1988 as a partnership between Steve Addi and Stephen Clayton. They chose the Ferry Landing in Coronado for their first gallery site. In 1991, the gallery name was changed to Stephen Clayton Galleries. It became Imagine Fine Art in 2010.
