Law enforcement to give away 400 anti-theft devices

Scores of motorists who drive vehicles favored by auto thieves are about to get some help in foiling the crooks.

Over the next several weeks, personnel from various San Diego-area law enforcement agencies will give away 400 steering wheel anti-theft locks to owners of the most frequently stolen types of cars and trucks.

Through the program, dubbed “SWAT-400,” officers will distribute the gratis Club devices at malls, supermarkets, trolley stations, apartment complexes and DUI checkpoints in local communities most plagued by auto theft, police officials announced during a midday briefing at Chula Vista Public Library.

Among the often-stolen vehicles whose owners will benefit from the giveaway are older-model Honda Civics and Accords, as well as several makes of light trucks.

The program is being underwritten by the National Insurance Crime Bureau and San Diego Regional Auto Theft Task Force.
