Christopher Columbus Day (originally Oct. 12, 1492 when the Italian explorer arrived in the Americas, specifically the Bahamas) first became a federal holiday in 1934.

True. In April 1934, as a result of lobbying by the Knights of Columbus, Congress, and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Oct. 12 was made a federal holiday under the name “Columbus Day.” It is observed on the second Monday of October (this year, Oct. 11) by banks, the bond market, the U.S. Postal Service and other federal agencies, most state government offices, and some school districts.

Columbus (1451-1506) was a navigator, colonizer and explorer from Genoa whose four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean (all funded by Isabella I of Castile, Spain) led to European awareness of the American continents in the Western Hemisphere.
