La Jollan celebrates 100th birthday
La Jolla centenarian Georgeanna Lipe celebrated her birthday in grand style last week at the home of her daughter Susanna Lipe Aalbers. Attending were her three children and spouses, Susanna and John Aalbers, Terry and Jerry Jordan, and Steele and Patty Lipe; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Born in Nashville, Tenn., in May 1909, Georgeanna graduated from Vanderbilt University as a medical illustrator. It was in her anatomy class where she met her future husband of 53 years, Dr. JT Lipe.
They moved to La Jolla in 1936, sight unseen, bought a vacant lot one house off the beach in the Barber Tract and started a family while Dr. Lipe practiced general medicine on Prospect Street, serving as Scripps Hospital chief of staff in 1947.
Georgeanna Lipe is most well known as a watercolor artist and a founding member of the La Jolla Art Association and the San Diego Watercolor Society. She opened The Artists Gallery on Girard Avenue at age 86.
