La Jolla Youth Baseball donates field for Chelsea’s Light baseball fundraiser

La Jolla Youth Baseball has donated its field at Cliffridge Park for use on Sunday to raise money for the Chelsea’s Light Scholarship Fund. In addition, the La Jolla Surf, a 12-and-under team managed by Tim Scott, Greg Hansen and Paul Delmore, will participate.

More than 720 young ballplayers, from 60 different baseball organizations, are expected to play in the a one-day tournament to raise money for the fund. The San Diego Show baseball organization, Triple Crown Sports and Full Gorilla Apparel are sponsoring the event, with the goal of raising at least $15,000.

In an e-mail, Scott, who is the president of La Jolla Youth Baseball, wrote that the board “was happy to provide our fields for this tournament. It gives La Jollans a local event that they can participate in by simply coming to the fields at Cliffridge, next to the La Jolla YMCA, supporting the teams, donating to the cause and enjoying the festivities, all in the memory of Chelsea King.”

In addition to La Jolla, games are being played at 4S Ranch, Fallbrook, Poway, and Carmel Mountain Ranch. Youth teams include players’ ages 9 to 13 years old. Games begin at 8 a.m. at most fields.

“Triple Crown Sports had the ability to lend a hand and help this event become a reality. We do a lot in San Diego and we felt that out of a tragedy, maybe some good could come by playing a little bit of baseball and by helping someone go to college,” said Kyle Gribble, Triple Crown’s director of baseball.

At 2 p.m., a check presentation will be made to the King family at the 4S Ranch Community Park, 16118 4S Ranch Parkway San Diego.
