La Jolla Tennis Club ready for tourney
Just call it Tennis Time in La Jolla for the next couple of weeks.
More than 1,100 players — from 10-year-olds to 80-year-olds — will take to the courts starting Friday in the La Jolla Tennis Club Championship.
Scott Farr, manager of the public club at 7632 Draper Ave., said the 94th annual event is the country’s oldest tournament held at the same venue.
“We get some of the best players every year,” he said. “They come from all over Southern California and we’ve got a contingent from Phoenix and 14 juniors coming from Australia.”
With 73 events, the tournament runs through Fourth of July, when the finals will add to the festivities around town. The public is invited to watch the competition.
In addition to the tennis, Farr said part of the fun of the event is the door prize drawing when “everybody gets something.”
His wife Jane has been working on the prizes, contacting all of the local merchants “who help make the event,” he added. The club’s tennis pro, Brent Davis, directs the tournament and Aimee Lansky chairs it.
La Jolla Tennis Club offers adult and children’s clinics and lessons for members and non-members. For information, go to
