La Jolla Realtor honored

La Jolla High grad and prominent Realtor Dr. Joseph Dean Klatt was honored last week at the La Jolla Real Estate Brokers Association (REBA) meeting when First District City Councilwoman Sherri Lightner presented a proclamation declaring Nov. 4 as “Dr. Joseph Klatt Day.”

The proclamation recognized Klatt for his accomplishments as a longtime real estate broker, Superior Court mediator, certified legal assistant and inspirational speaker with five bachelor’s degrees, one master’s degree and a Ph.D. in several fields including speech, philosophy, real estate and law.

Klatt, who is blind and has a seeing-eye dog German shepherd named Lawson, has an office at 1124 Wall St. He has served on REBA’s board of directors for 19 years, four as president and board chairman. In 1991, he received the R.K. Smith Broker of the Year Award, the highest award conferred on a La Jolla real estate broker.

Klatt is a Harvard Law School-trained master mediator who’s studied mediation and negotiation in London, Geneva, Lyons and throughout California. A frequent guest lecturer and guest professor at San Diego law schools, Dr. Klatt has served on the board of directors for the Association for Dispute Resolution (San Diego) for five years.

Asked what he was doing on Joe Klatt Day, the Realtor replied, “Working, just like I do on Labor Day.”

Klatt is also the author of a new book, “Deal Maker: Lessons from the Blind Master Negotiator,” due to be released at D.G. Wills Bookstore in La Jolla on Dec. 12.
