La Jolla Playhouse productions collect eight Tony nominations

Two La Jolla Playhouse shows are up for a multitude of Tony awards this year in New York.

The musical “Cry-Baby” has been nominated for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical (Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan), Best Original Score (Music and Lyrics: David Javerbaum and Adam Schlesinger) and Best Choreography (Rob Ashford).

The play was presented at the La Jolla Playhouse last winter, prior to making its Broadway debut.

“Xanadu,” also a musical, directed by Playhouse Artistic Director Christopher Ashley, as been nominated for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical (Douglas Carter Beane), Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical (Kerry Butler) and Best Choreography (Dan Knechtges).

The production is slated to show at the La Jolla Playhouse Nov. 11 through Dec. 28.

Both productions have already won numerous awards. The Tony award winners will be announced June 15.
