La Jolla Kiwanis donates to community groups

La Jolla Kiwanis started 2010 strong by giving $25,250 from January through March to a diverse group of community organizations.

Groups receiving La Jolla Community Services funds include La Jolla Meals on Wheels, The Riford Center, the Muirlands Foundation for the new field at the middle school, La Jolla Concerts-by-the-Sea to sponsor one concert this summer, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and SDSU’s music program.

In addition, the La Jolla Kiwanis Youth Services Committee provided funding to the Arthritis Foundation for youth arthritis education programs, the Athenaeum for youth music education programs, Breaking Cycles for a county youth probation/SDSU music program aimed at bringing music education to troubled youths, the Coastal Bay Girls Softball League for team uniforms; the Playwrights Project to support youth playwrights, the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts for two music programs, and the Tariq Khamisa Foundation for its summer enrichment program for at-risk children.

A new project for the group, which club spokeswoman Rebecca Morales wrote in a news release is particularly exciting, is helping the Coastal Bay Girls Softball League upgrade and revitalize the softball field at La Jolla Elementary School. The league is in the process of making the field more user-friendly for the young girls from La Jolla and Mission Bay who play in the league as well as for their supporters.

Barbara Birnbaum, president of the Coastal Bay Girls Softball League, said support from La Jolla Kiwanis has been integral to its growth and success in its inaugural season at La Jolla Elementary School.
