La Jolla High set for homecoming events

La Jolla High School’s board-game-themed homecoming weekend begins Friday with some Friday night football.

The Vikings will play the Madison High School Hawks 6:30 p.m. at the Gene Edwards Stadium. The homecoming dance takes place Saturday in the La Jolla High gym at 8 p.m.

Though the game and dance have not come to pass yet, the school’s associate student body’s planning has kept students in anticipation of the coming events. La Jolla High Vikings kicked off their 2010 homecoming season with a week of dress-up themes.

On Monday and Tuesday, students dressed up as rockers and their alter egos to show their school spirit. On Wednesday, each class was assigned a color from the Twister board game to wear. Spirit week will continue Fridady when students clothe themselves in Viking red and black — the school colors — for a pep rally during school hours.

Then, during Friday night’s halftime, each class from 2011 to 2014 along with the various campus clubs will be represented in a parade of floats illustrating the board-game theme. Members of this year’s homecoming court will be presented as a part of the parade.

“ASB has put weeks of creativity and effort into making this year’s homecoming as unforgettable and fun as possible!”

The funds raised from merchandise and tickets sold at the game will be distributed among the four classes to help lower senior dues that are paid when students graduate — things like yearbooks, cap/gown, prom.

The school’s alumni association will host the annual Alumni Homecoming Reception at 5 p.m. at the La Jolla High Library and Media Center before the game on Friday. The graduated classes of 1950, 1960, 1970, and 1990, which held reunions this past year, were invited to join in on the homecoming parade. The Grand Marshal will be Marvin VanArtsdalen, president of the Alumni Association and member from the class of 1962.

On Saturday night, students will head out for a night of fun and dancing. The gym will be transformed to reflect a variety of classic board games.
