La Jolla grad returns with Air Force water polo team

Recent La Jolla High School graduate Alex (Augie) Arcidiacono is one of three freshmen at the Air Force Academy (Colorado Springs, Colo.) selected to play for the Academy’s first water polo tournament for the 2009 season - the UCSD Triton Invitational in San Diego this weekend.

The Saturday-Sunday event features top NCAA Division I water polo teams such as USC and LMU.

On Aug. 5, Arcidiacono was formally accepted into the Air Force Academy as a fourth class cadet after six weeks of basic training. Prior to that, he played three years of varsity water polo at La Jolla High School under Coach Tom Atwell and was a team captain for the Vikings water polo team last season.

At the Air Force Academy, Arcidiacono juggles academics, water polo practice and military training. He is majoring in aeronautical engineering and plans to become a pilot.
