True or False?

World War I started on June 28, 1914.

(True.) The spark that set off World War I was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914. Since a Serbian nationalist secret society was blamed for the death, Austria-Hungary immediately declared war on Serbia. Russia (bound by treaty to Serbia) backed Serbia. Germany (allied to Austria-Hungary by treaty) declared war on Russia. France (bound by treaty to Russia) found itself at war against Germany. Britain (allied to France by a loosely worded treaty that placed a “moral obligation” upon her to defend France) declared war against Germany on Aug. 4.
