La Jolla crash injuries at 5; driver faces felony charges

By City News Service

A car remained in the front of Cass Street Cafe Sunday night. Three teenagers and two adults were injured when a driver, later arrested for drunk driving, ran up onto the sidewalk and then crashed in to Cass Street Cafe on La Jolla Boulevard around 7 p.m. Sunday, a police spokesman said.

One of the adult patrons was treated at a hospital and released, the other suffered minor injuries and did not go to the hospital, according to an Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros. He said one victim was pinned under the car.

The three teen-aged pedestrians struck were taken to Rady Children’s Hospital, with “serious injuries,” Delimitros said, adding that they were between the ages of 14 and 17.

The motorist was southbound on La Jolla Boulevard when he hit the three teens on the sidewalk before crashing into the restaurant, Delimitros said. The 67-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving.

A photographer on the scene said it appeared that a man came around the roundabout at Forward Street, between two trees and hit a power transformer before striking the victims.

At 8:30 p.m. the vehicle was still inside the restaurant and structural engineers were on the scene.

SDG&E spokeswoman April Sharp said Sunday night crews were on scene working to restore power to about 90 customers.
