La Jolla Country Day off to state volleyball championship

La Jolla may be big enough for two top varsity girls volleyball teams, but there is room for only one in the state championship game.

La Jolla Country Day defeated Bishops 3-1 (25-17, 18-25, 25-22, 25-15) Tuesday, earning the right to challenge the Sacramento Christian Brothers for it all. That match will take place at UC Irvine’s Bren Center at noon on Saturday.

Mollie Rogers led the Country Day attack with 15 kills, while Chloe Mathis and Jessie Altman combined for 31 assists.

The schools split the first two games, but La Jolla Country Day squeeked out a 25-22 victory in the third frame and never looked back. The Torries (34-1) also defeated Bishops (30-9) in the San Diego Section IV championship last month, but both earned spots in the overall playoffs.
